The title ‘Little Magazine’ is a reference to a form of periodical or short-run exquisite journal that would be passed under the table like samizdat. A magazine for connoisseurs that blends sumptuous production with layered detail and refined taste.
This layering reflects the complex referential and contextual underpinnings of the artists’ work represented in the exhibition providing a platform for artwork that seeks to open up critical positions with self-reflexive rigour at a historical moment when these qualities are not de rigeur.

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, fashionable East Berliners created a fantasy world that was not available on state stocked wardrobes and clothing retailers. This fascinating documentary examines the perils of an industry taken for granted in the west, and has the insight of both director Wilms – labelled an ‘enemy of the state’ as a teenager - and stylist Frank Schafer. This personal account is at times very touching, and also very thrilling – a constant fear of arrest hangs over the scene.
The screening is followed by a grand fashion show staged by Noir! and a party reflecting the theme of the film.
